Christy Girl Illustrations
Illustrations by Howard Chandler Christy (1873-1952)
Articles illustrated by Christy were published by Scribner's, Leslie's Weekly and McClure's, as well as many other magazines.
Christy's painting technique was sumptuous, and he was in great demand as a portraitist. Among the notables he painted were Mrs. Calvin Coolidge, Amelia Earhart and Mrs. William Randolf Hearst. He was a popular teacher at Cooper Union, New York School of Art and the Art Student's League.
Diners at New York's famous Café des Artistes are familiar with his several murals adorning the walls. His most famous mural is a 20' by 30' canvas, "The Signing of the Constitution," which hangs in the rotunda of the Capitol in Washington D.C. He was elected to the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 1980.
